Hellboy

To : Orcs

“What makes a man a man? Is it his origins? The way he comes to life? I don't think so. It's the choices he makes. Not how he starts things, but how he decides to end them.”

(agent John Myers in Hellboy movie)

I’ve done an analysis of this movie by using Post-Structuralism perspective. The standard concept of social life may disapprove with this fiction story. The main character (hero) of this movie is a devil, you will agree with this if you focus on his (I will start calling this creature “his”) physical appearance. Covered by red skin, we will automatically judge him as a “devil”. It is compounded by a couple of horns on his forehead that will make you agree if I categorize him into a kind of monster. His appearance is worsened by the fact that his eyes are yellow and he has a tail. Now, let me talk about his attitude. In this movie, he is portrayed as a hero, an infant boy born in hell, but nurtured by a human, Prof. Broom (if I’m not mistaken). He is growing to be an adult, but still people call him Hell-Boy. Set to be a hero, he often seems to come and rescue people with his power and ability destroying monster. Ah, I forget to mention this part, one of his arms is a stone-made function to open a portal to connect this earth to other dimension inhabited by monsters.

Is he a man then? Let me discuss his attitude. Nurtured by a kind man, he becomes more likely a human. He treats Prof. Broom respectfully, even though he has an appetite for doing some child-like deeds. He has a fonder heart about a girl. He is able to turn his face jealously when his girl enjoying her time with other man.

Is he a man then? He chooses not to open the portal though forced by Rasputin by torturing his lover. He decides to save the earth and his lover. He is so humane.

I’m not going to compare this Hellboy to a man. I’m trying to share my experience during my existence in this mental world, I mean this real world. The most recent experience, been shouted by an old-man, not because of my wrongdoing, but his bad temper. I don’t want to put my finger of blame on him. Some people often prefer shouting to speaking though my body is not far enough to make him shouting. I am not angry at all about his bad temper. But I have an objection with his mental quality. He shouted at me about having too many jobs to be handled. Yes, I see, and listen, you are always telling me about this, and you are always shouting at me again.  Does he have a brain inside his head? Perhaps he is too busy to think about others' heart. May be he is too dumb to hear my explanation. Only a couple of sentences may be enough to prevent him from losing his energy to shout. Oh man, your age is more than double of mine. Do I have to teach you about moral? How to treat other? How to avoid your habitual deed of embarrassing others? I am not a perfect one to teach this, but I am more humane than you I guess.

Is he a monster than? He is always shouting at others with irritating words and he is always begging others' for help. His feeling of superiority destroys his humanity. Oh man… I feel sorry about it.

Nevertheless, I’m going to thank him for these happy memories. He makes me realize that possibly I have a chance to be a monster because of my confidence of being right sometimes. He reminds me to always consider others’ feelings. He makes me understand how important giving others a chance to explain is.

What makes a monster a monster? Is it his origins? The way he comes to life? I don't think so. It's the choices he makes. Not how he starts things, but how he decides to end them.

Sincerely
Me - a human being
